Golden Living Center

In observance of Active Aging Week, residents of Tekamah's Golden LivingCenter participated in the "Walk Your Age" event on Sept. 21. Each resident participating walked (or was pushed) a specific number of steps based on the year they were born. The group released balloons preceding the walk. Aegis Therapies celebrated Active Aging Week Sept. 21-27 by hosting a special "Walk Your Age" event at Golden LivingCenter in Tekamah.

Aegis is the therapy services provider for Golden Living. Developed by the International Council on Aging, Active Aging Week promotes the benefits of a healthy lifestyle by providing older adults the opportunity to experience activities and exercise in a safe, friendly and fun atmosphere.

On Monday Sept. 21, each Active Aging Week participant walked for a specific number of steps based on the year they were born.

A good effort was put forth to achieve this goal. Participants lined up outside of Golden LivingCenter ready for the big walk. The start of our journey began with a group balloon release. Residents with pedometers on their hips braved the cool fall air and walked with family and friends. The event ended with a barbecue in the dining room.

Fall has arrived and seasonal events have filled our calendars. A trip to Small's Fruit Farm is a treat for all the senses. The sites and sounds of rustling leaves and apple pickers surrounded us. After visiting the apple barn, we were able to watch the apple press squeeze out some wonderful apple juice. Our taste buds were very pleased with our stop in the pie parlor for pie and ice cream, where the air was filled with the smells of cinnamon and baked apples.

Earlier this month, the Men's Club enjoyed a trip to the Chatt Center to enjoy an afternoon of football. That same day, a group of residents enjoyed a Soup and Song Supper at the local Faith Family Baptist Church. And our Grandparents Day ice cream social was a pleasant Sunday afternoon with family and friends.

As the holidays approach, the activity department is starting a wish list. It includes playing cards, craft supplies, holiday decorations, party decorations and bingo prizes, to name a few. If you are interested in donating or would like to volunteer to help with an activity, contact Theresa McKee at 374-1414.
