File of Life available at GLC

Wednesday, December 23, 2009 8:51 AM CST

Golden LivingCenter in Tekamah is rolling out a new program to help medical professionals in an emergency.

The public is invited to obtain a File of Life from the center. The File of Life contains information such as medications, surgeries, doctor's information, allergies and so much more. It is designed to be placed on a refrigerator or similar convenient spot, where it can easily be found in case of an emergency.

Golden LivingCenter staff will be at the Chatt Center Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m. to present the program and then again on Jan. 7 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. to hand out File of Life cards and magnets. Each person also gets a pocket-sized File of Life to carry with them.

Individuals can go to Golden Living anytime to receive a File of Life at no charge. Staff will even help fill it out correctly.

According to Social Service Director Carissa Oligmueller, some communities have recipients put the File of Life in their freezer, but local fire and rescue personnel have asked that the file be more visible, prompting the suggestion to place it on the outside of the refrigerator.

Oligmueller said the Tekamah Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department members are very excited about this new program.

"I think it's really good idea for the community and for everybody," said Nursing Director Tammy Lippold. "The squad can quick pull it and see medications or what their risks are."
